Mobile service provider Vodafone has unveiled what it claims to be the world’s lowest price mobile phone to date. The Vodafone 150 with an unsubsidized price tag of less than 15 USD. A slightly higher version Vodafone 250 would also be available at a price less than USD 20.The European mobile company launched the Vodafone 150 and 250 at the ongoing Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Vodafone 150 and 250 model are all set to be launched in India, Turkey and eight African countries namely DRC, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Qatar in the coming weeks.. These handsets are targeted towards the emerging markets where low cost products have a positive response.
The Vodafone handset comes with 5 way navigation key, 1 inch 96 x 64 monochrome display, polyphonic ringtones, dual-band GSM, a currency converter, an alarm clock, 2 embedded games, polyphonic ringtones, built-in torch and a mini USB connector. With its 500 mAh rated battery, it offers a talk time of up to 5 hours and a sturdy standby of 400 hours.
Other specifications of the Vodafone handset include SMS storage and phone book memory up to 100 entries. Vodafone 250 comes with a 1.45 inches 128 x 128 pixel CSTN color screen and offers FM radio and stereo headset support, wallpapers as additional features.
The features and specifications of the Vodafone 150 include voice calls, sms and built-in support for mobile payment services. The use of mobile phones in banking and mobile health services transactions has gained popularity in the developing nations. Dependency on mobile phones to transfer and save money has seen an upward trend in recent times.
The M-PESA service developed by Vodafone is a testimony to this fact with more than 11 million registered customers who depend on their mobile phones for transactions such as money transfer, top up, bill payments etc.With the introduction of these models, the company aims to reach out to more people and thus increase its penetration not only in urban but also in rural segments.
